Our Scholarship fund is designed to provide training for people with rescue dogs in need. Our goal is to help keep dogs out of shelters. We believe that training saves lives and our mission is to make a difference in the world one dog at a time.

The fund was created in honor of Mr. Hud and Hank Bennett. As a result of these two rescue dogs, we are passionate about three issues that are prevalent with rescue dogs, particularly in Houston: confidence building, pitbull misconceptions, and leash reactivity.

Hud belonged to Believe in Dog’s owner Stephanie, and he was the rescue dog that started it all. He was rescued from Jack Russell Rescue in 2007. He was our muse, ambassador, trick dog, therapy dog, demo dog, puppy coach, and a remarkably terrific trainer of humans!

One of Hud’s most extraordinary skills was his ability to help newly rescued, fearful and shy dogs come out of their shell and blossom. He taught us so much about how to help dogs build confidence, and now this is one of BID’s fortes.

Stephanie picked up a very skinny and sick Hank as a stray in the Heights during a coldfront in 2010. During Hank’s recovery, Stephanie learned that this pitbull mix was the most affectionate dog she had ever owned. After his recovery, Stephanie learned that Hank loved other dogs, but he was highly leash-reactive. Thus, the deep dive into the complicated behavior of leash reactivity began. As a result Leash Reactivity is now one of BID’s specialties. We continually aspire to create more services and classes for our “Reactive Rovers”.

Some dogs end up teaching us more than we teach them. Hud and Hank are missed everyday, but with every new rescue dog we help, their legacy lives on.
